Miniature and slower growing dwarf conifers are the perfect companions for alpines when planted in troughs and rock gardens. Many of the plants in this list come in 4" and 1 gallon containers. However, some will only be available in larger sizes. Please check for size availability and price.

CYPRESS - Siberian

Microbiota decussata...on a standard
Prostrate, Dwarf, Full sun/part shade, Zone 3
Woody groundcover with bright green spring foliage, dark green summer foliage, and dark brown, bronzed foliage in fall and winter. Best performance occurs in partial sun in moist, well-drained soils, but it is very adaptable to poor, dry soils in sun and wind-exposed sites. Mature at 1' tall x 6' wide, although it can get taller and wider in time. (A.K.A. Russian Cypress or Russian Arborvitae)

A Jerry Morris introduction. Named for Chub Harper, a great connoisseur and authority on conifers. Found in northern New Mexico as a broom in 1996. Tight growth and good blue color, gradually attains a pyramidal shape. Rubbery, soft foliage. Grows 1-2"/year. Great for a rock garden!

This exciting new selection originated as a witches broom on Abies koreana 'Horstmann's Silverlocke' in Germany. It has the same recurved foliage but everything is reduced in size. The growth habit appears to be that of a miniature, flat-topped cushion. The recurved foliage gives this a silver-white color and produces an exceptionally nice plant that stands out in the landscape!

The parent plant was found in the Rocky Mountains by Jerry Morris. It was tall with tight, short, horizontal branching. Blue tufts appeared along its length creating a bonsai look. Young plants are cushion-shape. Good for rock gardens and troughs where height is desired.

HEMLOCKS

Tsuga canadensis 'Abbott's Pygmy'
Globose, Miniature, Full sun/part shade, Zone 4
Possibly the smallest Hemlock cultivar and also one of the smallest of all conifers. Tiny dark green leaves on a globose shaped plant. Despite its tiny size this is a tough, hardy plant only needing protection from the strong afternoon sun and, more importantly, protection from foot traffic. 1-1.5' in 10 years. Great Rock garden plant.

A miniature form of Canadian Hemlock. Very small cristate needles on stems that grow ½ inch per year.

Tsuga Canadensis 'Betty Rose'

'Betty Rose' is an extremely slow growing hemlock. This irregular shaped, mounded shrub is very quaint and compact. The new growth, both in spring and in late summer, is creamy white against the mature, dark green foliage. With time it becomes pyramidal in shape. Ideal for rock gardens and troughs.

Tsuga canadensis 'Cole's Prostrate'

Stiff main branches knuckle under and bend downwards making a truly prostrate form. Gnarly interior branches display silver bark, adding dimension to this excellent low spreading hemlock. Use to drape over or around stones or walls in the landscape. A true garden gem!

A slow-growing globe to pyramidal shrub. Needles are frosted with white. An excellent accent for the shade garden, will brighten any dark spot and the thin branches provide a delicate texture. The tree in this picture is 15-20 years old. I have looked a long time to find this one!

A favorite small pine. It is handsome and ideal for the small garden space, such as a rock garden or even as a container plant. Pinus mugo 'Mops'

This genuinely dwarf, winning selection grows into a low, dense dome that stays compact without shearing. The smooth appearance of the mounded plant is the result of many evenly spaced needles on abundant branchlets, all of which grow at a uniform rate. During most of the year, 'Mops' displays a hint of gray/blue in its green, but during the crisp, cold months of winter, needles take on a warm, golden hue. Great for confined spaces.

One of the more exciting cultivars is this selection from Australia. It is a dwarf, flat-topped bush with thin branches and fine textured foliage. Its most striking characteristic is the development of miniature cones on the tips of the recent year's growth. Develops into a bush twice as wide as high. Very similar to Picea abies 'Acrocona'. Slow to develop, approx. 2" per year, it takes about 5 years to form a nice shape.
