Hakonechloa macra 'All Gold' (hah -koe-neh-KLOE-uh)
'All Gold' has all the admirable qualities of its deservedly popular cousin, H. macra 'Aureola'. Long sword-shaped leaves forming graceful clumps but the foliage of this newcomer is completely golden, without a hint of tree green, making it even more striking. Great planted along a woodland path or beside a shady terrace, or anywhere in soft, dappled light.
Hydrangea macrophylla 'Pia'
This dwarf hydrangea will give you everything that its largest cousins can, but will easily fit into that unused small space in the garden. 'Pia' is named for one of Dante's tragic heroines in "The Divine Comedy." Expect the 4-5 inch flowerheads on this plant to be vivid carmine red with white centers against dark green foliage. And proving that good things do come in small packages, 'Pia' produces truly outstanding flowers that maintain their color regardless of soil pH.
Tuck it into any small space. Grows 2-3' x 2-3' Zone 5 (they say Zone 6, but I have had mine for several years in Zone 5 without a problem!) Full sun to shade.
